India quadruples imports of Russian diamonds to $215 mln in Aug
MOSCOW, Oct 23 (PRIME) -- India quadrupled its imports of Russian diamonds on the year and raised it by 9% on the month to U.S. $215.1 million in August, as seen by PRIME in materials of the Indian Commerce and Industry Ministry on October 21.
The August imports became India’s record monthly amount since March 2018 when the country bought $481 million worth of Russian diamonds.
In January–August, imports of Russian diamonds rose by 29% on the year to $863 million.
In September, India’s Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) asked Russian diamond mining giant ALROSA to suspend diamond sales to the country for September and October. After that India’s the largest diamond companies recommended a full two-month ban on imports of rough diamonds.
